Navigating Confidence Without Letting It Run the Show.

The ego — that little voice in our heads that hypes us up but can also trip us up — plays a significant role, especially in our twenties when we’re still figuring stuff out. It’s a mixed bag, helping us chase our goals while sometimes complicating life.

Little ego can be a good thing to push ourselves to improve, tackle challenges, and work to succeed. Let’s be honest — ego can also get in the way. When it gets too big, we start brushing off criticism, avoiding teamwork, or acting like we have all the answers (spoiler: we don’t). That attitude can shut down learning and make things more complex than they need to be.

It doesn’t stop there — the ego also follows us into our careers. A healthy confidence level can open doors, fuel ambition, and help us take the risks that lead to growth. It’s excellent that ego pushes us to take a role.

But when ego takes over? That’s when things get messy. If we get too caught up in craving praise, power, or validation, we might start making questionable choices, clashing with coworkers, or failing to recognize other people’s contributions. That kind of energy can slow down career growth and hurt our reputation.

Checking in with ourselves helps us see whether we’re being driven by growth or just feeding our ego. Feedback from other people can be valuable perspectives. Appreciating teamwork and Letting failures and setbacks are learning experiences instead of threats. Focusing on growth instead of outside validation keeps us improving instead of just proving ourselves.

Ego isn’t the bad guy — it just needs to be managed. Balancing it with humility and a growth mindset can be a real asset in school, work, and life. So, stay confident, keep learning, and enjoy the ride.
